DC Faves: Volt Range

Julip Made DC Faves Range2 This summer I was lucky enough to be asked to do a collaboration with Chevy Chase Pavilion including Volt Range and World Market. I also created a shared a cocktail on Julip Made, which you can see here.  Part of this collaboration included a tasting at Range.  Although the tasting was part of my collaboration, since then I've been back numerous times because Range is just THAT good.  Their cocktail list is playful, seasonal, and innovative and definitely worth the price, which is reasonable.  Their bread basket (pictured above) comes with six different spreads and a myriad of mouth watering, warm breads.  I've ordered it every time!

What I love about Range, beyond the delicious cocktails and delectable dishes is the obvious fact that Bryan Voltaggio and his team truly respect and enjoy their craft.  They look for seasonal and local flavors and constantly experiment with making in-house products.  The open kitchen layout enables you to see some of these products being made including charcuterie at the salumeria (see our charcuterie tasting board below), fresh baked breads at the bakery, a raw bar, and confiserie/chocolaterie producing delicious truffles and candies.

Their menu is structured around the work stations of the kitchen and most all are sharable small plates so I recommend getting a variety of dishes to share. Highlights from my meals there and dishes that are sure to delight include:
  • wild salmon and charred lemon crudo
  • wood oven roasted beef marrow bones with pine nuts and golden raisins (pictured below)
  • the charcuterie board (pictured below)
  • pork cheek ravioli with baby corn 
  • kimchi linguini with uni
  • lamb leg with a zesty romesco sauce
  • and of course the bread basket (pictured above)!
As for the cocktails, you almost can't go wrong.  My all time favorites have been Waking Up to Cannonfire (mezcal, avocado, hellfire bitters, and grapefruit), Los Rudos (mescal, lillet, and grapefruit), and the best savory cocktail I've ever had... East Sea (gin, St. Germain, and kombu broth).  Whatever you get though, you definitely won't regret it!

The bar is no exception, with oak caskets aging house-made spirits and homemade shrubs and bitters lining the bar. After spending a couple hours at the bar sipping on their playful, delicious creations and chatting about drinks and food with the bartenders, I was struck by two concepts: experimenting with technique & flavor and a respect for seasonal ingredients. These concepts inspired me to create two cocktails to serve my guests at a recent al fresco cocktail party.
