Julip Made DC faves SW wharf I've been going to the Maine Avenue Fish Market in SW since I was younger with my father.  To this day it remains a unique seafood shopping experience in the District  with fresh fish and decent prices especially compared the exorbitant prices you find at Whole Foods.
The wharf consists of several seafood vendors selling a myriad of fish in addition to blue crabs, soft shell crabs, octopus, squid, scallops, clams, and crawfish to name a few.  You can also get your purchases seasoned and steamed after you order it for free.  Although, I typically like to hand pick and smell my purchases before to ensure that they are fresh.  There are also several fast-seafood vendors where you can pick up a plate of steamed crawfish and a half ear of corn or fries to go.  The place gets crowded on weekends and parking can be difficult, so I'd recommend going during weekdays and off-peak hours.

I'll be honest, this isn't a fancy market and definitely smells fishy, but is worth the trip.  Remember this party and that fish? Yep that was purchased here before being grilled whole and drizzled with a delicious orange saffron butter. 1. Julie- I'm glad you posted about this place. I haven't been, but you've convinced me to visit. NJites like me always hear that the seafood markets here can't compare to, say, Ippolito's in Philly. Well, if we don't support them, of course they won't!

  2. Thanks for this post! Very help for a DC seafood lover to know about.

  3. Love this place! By far the cheapest and freshest seafood in the city...and a unique experience to boot. :)

  4. Thanks for sharing! I love finding great places to get fresh seafood-- my favorite!

  5. It's always interesting to see someone who isn't from DC review this place. It's like when you're from here this place is just...the wharf. I love it though with it's lack of lines service, and waiting in the super long line for them to steam your crabs. This is what my summers where made of, getting bushels of crabs and shrimp and eating with your family over the sugary by delicious strawberry lemonade they sell there too.

  6. I was very impressed by this post, this site has always been pleasant news. Thank you very much for such an interesting post. Keep working, great job! In my free time, I like play game: redball4games.com. What about you?
