The Art of Entertaining... Pick Your Serving Dishes Ahead of Time

029 This is the continuation of my new series, The Art of Entertaining, seeking to share with you small tips and tricks for making your hostessing experience easier and more enjoyable. Today's hint is really simple, but can save time and stress in those final minutes of plating before guests arrive...

...pick which serving dishes you will use for which courses/ plates.  I like to use post it notes to play around with what dish I think should go where and to mark my final decision.  Also, clean and dry them ahead of time so you aren't pulling out that dusty silver platter you got at your bridal shower ages ago and then having to polish it as the guests arrive.  Doing this will give you an idea of what you are missing so you can either go out and buy it or ask a friend to borrow before hand.  Finally,  you'll also get a sense for the amount of space you'll need to display your food and can plan accordingly.

I hope you are enjoying this series and please send me any entertaining questions you have and I'll do my best to incorporate it into this series!

  1. What a great idea! I love that you use sticky notes to organize before guests arrive. Very smart.

  2. My husband has done this for our parties & at first I rolled my eyes at him. But it helped out so much & made plating the food while people were there so easy!
(Hate it when my husband is right!)

  3. fantastic idea! i love when everything is organized!

  4. What a great idea. Makes me want to host a little dinner party!

  5. Ok, that's actually a ridiculously helpful tip! I can't even tell you how much time and anxiety attacks this is going to save me the next time I muster up the courage to entertain. Great post, Julie!!

  6. This will help my plating time in half!
