Help! I Need...

... a new camera.  For my birthday, I am getting a new camera, but am overwhelmed with the choices available.  My needs/ wants are:

  • user friendly starter DSLR camera
  • reasonably priced
  • to be used for general photography with an emphasis on food and interiors (and of course Odin)
  • live view
  • good warranty
The two that I have somewhat narrowed down to {with MAJOR help from the Boy} are:
  1. Canon EOS Rebel XS DSLR Camera with Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS lens.
  2. Sony a330 DSLR Camera and Lens.
So with that said, what kind of camera do you use? Which of the two would you pick? Do you recommend any others? Any advice for what I should be looking for?  Any advice at all is greatly appreciated!

  1. I think both your choices are highly rated on consumer watch! I remember doing the same research and I went with a Canon. You really can't go wrong with either. So excited for you!

  2. I just got a nikon 3000...it's amazing...the photos are so completely amazing...you wont be sorry!

  3. Hmmm... my camera is nothing special and I am in desperate need of an upgrade. Wish I could be more help. Let us know what you end up getting and if you like it. I'm hoping Santa might bring me one if I'm good this year! xo

  4. I have a Nikon D60, which a photographer friend recommended to me. It's easy to use and takes really nice pictures. I would recommend getting an additional zoom lens for whichever camera you decide to buy.

    {It was definitely an awful feeling when Jackson was missing. If our dogs only knew how much we miss them when they disappear! He was back to his normal self within a day or two of coming home, but I'm still not quite over it all!}

  5. Hey girl! I use the Canon Rebel you listed above. I'd also recommend you throw in a fixed lens -- it'll help get those delicious photos with a bigger depth of field. You can get one for like $100 on Amazon. (Email me if you want more specifics)

The only prob I've encountered with the Canon is its size -- I hate toting it around places or breaking it out at friends' houses for impromptu pics. People look at you like "Who do you think you are?" So with that in mind, the next DSLR camera on my list is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. Love the vintage inspired design, how compact it is, can still switch out the lenses, etc.

  6. I agree with Victoria! Size can sometimes be an issue and I have read a lot of wonderful things about the Panasonic Lumix. I use a Nikon D3000 which I adore {but pretty large, too}!

  7. I want a new camera too! I just have a plain old point and shoot! Can't wait to hear what you choose!

  8. We are getting a camera tonight... so excited! A Canon something or other... it will be my first DLSR, can't wait! P.S. Found you via VMac+Cheese... newly following! xo
